Poplar-type propolis provides protection of blood cells, testosterone levels and sperm motility in cisplatin-induced toxicity

Cisplatin is a frequently used chemotherapeutic in many types of cancer, especially urological cancers. Despite its efficacy the treatment it causes various toxic side effects such as nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity and ototoxicity. The aim this study was to determine protective role olive oil extract propolis (OEP) with biochemical histopathological approaches cisplatin induced toxicity. Sixty-four adult male Wistar rats were divided into eight groups, control, (100 200 mg/kg, orally daily for 10 days) combined therapy (propolis days before after CP injection). Haematological (Wbc, Rbc, Mpv, Hgb, Htc, Mcv, Mch, Mchc, Lym, Neu), (triglyceride, total cholesteol, HDL LDL-cholesterol, glucose, BUN, uric acid testosterone level), epididymal sperm concentration, motility, histological parameters analyzed. According results, has negative on hematological, parameters, motility compared control group. Administration pre-cisplatin ameliorated wbc, hct, mcv, mchc, neu levels. administration OEP prior normalized increased BUN levels by CP. Interestingly also revealed that groups Additionally, decreased CP, particularly pre-treatment OEP. As result, propolis, natural product numerous useful biological effects, shown have well amelioration normalizing effect CP-induced damage.
